The Future of Child Care Depends on Strong Advocacy. My name is Shaolin Brown. I am a mom, a child care provider, a community advocate, and a candidate for Mercer County Clerk. But before any title, I am someone deeply committed to the well-being of children and the families who care for them. Why Advocacy Matters Child care is more than a service it’s the backbone of our communities. Every parent who works, studies, or builds a small business depends on reliable, affordable care for their children. Yet too often, child care providers are asked to do more with less: less funding, less support, and less recognition. The Struggle Providers Face I’ve seen firsthand the dedication it takes to nurture young minds while balancing regulations, licensing requirements, and the realities of running a small business. Too many talented caregivers are leaving the field because they can’t sustain their programs under today’s conditions. When child care providers struggle, families struggle, and so does our economy. The Call to Action This is why advocacy matters. Child care isn’t just a “women’s issue” or a “family issue” it’s an economic issue, a workforce issue, and a justice issue. We need leaders who will fight for policies that expand access to funding, support home-based providers, raise pay for teachers, and streamline regulations. When providers are supported, children thrive, parents can work, and communities grow stronger. Together, we can create a future where every child has access to safe, high quality care, and every provider has the resources to keep their doors open. —
